Vanilla Cake from Vanilla Kajang

Address of Vanilla Kajang

When hubby said “Let’s celebrate the boys birthday” on Monday (their birthday on Lunar Calender), I jumped at the chance and drove all the way to Kajang to check out Vanilla Kajang for their signature item, Vanilla Cake.

Vanilla Bakery Shop in Kajang

This bakery shop is located somewhere opposite Mac Donald Kajang, which is also same row as Chip Lee Stationary Shop, if you are familiar with Kajang. Parking was horrible there, but luckily I managed to find a place behind the shop, next to a very BIG longkang!

Signature Vanilla Cake @ Rm63/kg

I did not pre-order this cake, hence I just grab a plain design over the counter by adding to miniature cartoon toy on it for the boys. One cake for 2 boys, and it had been only one cake for them over the years. Stingy hor, hehe….

Thin layers of vanilla custard

A True Vanilla Cake made of hand-picked vanilla beans and pure vanilla extract. Never had any True Vanilla Cake from any bakery shops. It taste really unique. Unfortunately the layers of vanilla custard were not that thick compare to the one my friend ordered for her daughter’s birthday recently. Worth driving down all the way to Kajang if you wish to taste a True Vanilla Cake :)

Tips to Crunchy Prawns

I was wondering why prawn served in Dim Sum restaurant can be that crunchy, even though they were using the frozen dim sum. Definitely the prawns cannot be that fresh anymore right?
Hence I google and stumble a very good post from this site. I modify steps a bit to my own convenience.
My way of doing it was:
1. Marinate peeled and deveined prawn with baking soda (I left it overnight and divided them into small portions)
2. Before using, just wash off some of the baking soda (you will see lots of bubbles during washing, and the prawns will somehow look very translucent)
3. Before cooking, add some tapioca starch and egg white to marinate it for a while.
Super easy right? My prawn was incredibly crunchy even I fry QQ’s tomato egg with it!

Cilli paste for steamboat

I love the sourish steamboat cilli paste from a steamboat shop outside my house, but I can’t find any recipe for something similar online. Hence I tried it out myself with ingredients as below:

  • Red Cilli
  • Garlic
  • Sugar and Salt to taste
  • Pounded fresh Ginger sauce
  • White Vinegar

I pounded red cilli and garlic before adding the rest together (estimated the amount according to my taste) before I add some white vinegar to it. Viola, it taste just as good as those we had in steamboat restaurant!

Yam Cake (Wu Tau Kou)

Made this years back, taught by neighbour. Her yam cake is fantastic!  My family, especially my father has always love yam cake.

Ingredients

  • 1 yam, cubed
  • 5 cloves garlics

(A) Mix Well

  • 1 packet blended rice flour
  • 2 tbsp tapioca flour
  • Water (agak-agak)
  • Seasoning – salt, 5 spieces powder, sugar to taste
  • Garnishing – shallot crisp, dried prawns crips

Method

  1. Heat oil and sauté shallots and dried prawns (separately) till crisp. Dish out and set aside.
  2. Saute garlic with remaining oil, add in yam and stir-fry till fragrant. Mix in water and bring to boil.
  3. Add in mixture (A), cook batter becomes thick. Pour out batter into a greased tray to steam (30minutes).
  4. Once yam cake is cooled, add garnishing and serve with your favourite sauce (I use sweet black sauce from the market).

Anniversay dinner

I like marketing for our dinner and cook up a storm, laying them up all on my table tennis as if my kids can eat!

I just buy and store them all into my fridge until at times I even forgotten what I have got in there. Since tomorrow will be our wedding anniversary, I might just prepare a easy steamboat since my girl loves it too. Can’t wait to get the sauce ready first this evening :)

Simple dishes for parties

I love cooking for parties and I just need to arrange them nicely and lay on our prettily wrapped up table where we do table tennis.

Although we can easily order just some foods from the caterers, I find that it is more challenging when I get to plan and cook all the dishes ourselves (of course, also with a maid to help out preparing the ingredients, and most importantly, washing up!)

Instant Curry Chicken using the A1 Curry Chicken Paste

With the easily available A1 Curry Paste @ RM3.50, who needs to pound ingredients for curry anymore? I just need to buy the paste, 1 coconut and 1.5 whole chicken to come up with this. It taste just as good as those my Grandma used to cook (mixture of spices in the curry powder from the Indian shop in the olden day).

Fried Mee Hoon

Next we cooked a pack of fried meehoon to go with the curry chicken. Not a very difficult task as we used to cook this sometimes. My maid can cook very well and I just had to leave this to her.

Crispy Nuggets and Cheesy Jumbo Sausages

Another great hit among adults and children, especially, are these Fried Nuggets, and Cheesy Sausages. For nuggets, I always go for the most pricey Ayamas Nuget Crispy (red and purple color packing). They are the best and you will never go wrong with it. To keep them crispy, we fried them last, 30mins just before the arrival of our guests. Cheesy Sausages (we like the Jusco Brand Jumbo Cheese Sausages) is over easy too, as we usually only boiled them.

Another simple dish will be Fresh Salad with a bottle of Thousand Island sauce. All we have to do was just washing up the lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cut and grate the carrots.

Besides all the above, we also cook Nasi Lemak, Fried Ikan Bilis and made a very nice bowl of Sambal with fresh tomatoes. I had Kakak pounded and cooked the sambal a day up front so we don’t have to cook and clean like crazy on the day of the party.

I am indeed looking forward what to prepare for my boys coming up birthday celebration. It is going to be a much simpler one as most of our guests will be little kids in school. Since it falls on a Wednesday, I’ll perhaps hold 2 small parties. One a day ahead at their playgroup on Tuesday and another on the actual day on Wednesday at their Mandarin class :)

Cakes from Tong Kee Bakery

I regretted for not getting a Princess Barbie Cake for QQ again this year. We settled with just a normal fruit cake from the newly open bakery Tong Kee in our neighbourhood, but with a not-very-nice Princess Belle drawn on it.

Taste wise, I like the cake, fresh and fluffy. Unfortunately the fresh cream was too watery and it melts very quickly. Hubby complained their cakes were too sweet.

But my neighbour swear by their Pandan Layered Cake. Whatever good cake it is, I must try! So I went to get a box yesterday. It comes in a box of 3 slices at Rm4.50.

Unlike Pandan Layer cakes from other bakery which usually taste very sweet, Pandan Layer from Tong Kee taste a bit salty. The cake texture is extremely soft and together with the salty Pandan layer, it taste just so right and nice!

A little box of this Pandan Layered Cake from Tong Kee is just great a door gift if you are visiting anyone’s home :)

Happy Father’s Day

It is hard to skip meals and go on Herbalife juice diet especially when dinning out with our loved ones. During weekend mornings, hubby and I love to sneak out early morning to the market when the kids are still sleeping. It feels great to just sit down together sharing just a cup of hot tea. Without having the kids around, we get to chat in peace.

Today is Father’s Day. We do not have any special celebration for him although I would like to get a samsung 3d tvs for him.We night just visit one of our favourite restaurant nearby to have dinner after QQ’s swimming lesson tonight.

Wishing all Father’s there, Happy Father’s Day to you!

Build to collect rent

Unlike many years back when we first moved in, our residential area is becoming very packed. More homes are built and more young families choose to move over here due because houses is cheaper than other places in Klang Valley. With the booming effect, we get better shops around too. We also have great choices when it comes to bakery shops and restaurants. Yesterday we saw another new big steel building being built for rent. How nice if we can afford a piece of land here ya…

Tong Kee Egg Tarts

Hooray, Tong Kee just opened another outlet in our residential area!

Egg Tarts from Tong Kee taste very different from egg tarts from other bakery. Not only they are not sweet, the pastry are made of lards!

Although lards are not good for health and you might need even need to buyliporexall.com for your expanded waistline, they make pastry undeniable yummy!

They sell 2 types of Egg Tarts, butter or lards. Besides egg tarts, they have also many types of pastry and tarts.

A friend praised their Siew Pau but I find it normal. But I still prefer the sweeter taste Siew Pau from Seremban, *yum yum*. Coming up soon, review on Tong Kee’s cakes…
